Turkish company builds its brand with stone walls (TR)

Constructing stone homes that combine volcanic stone and wood in the Alaçati district of the Aegean province of Izmir, Turkish company Veryeriler is receiving interest from Turkey and abroad. "We are putting in a lot of labor, but we are creating new neighborhoods that look like the old Greek neighborhoods," the company’s deputy chairman says.
Veryeriler Insaat, a Turkish construction firm that began in carpentry, has created a new brand in stone houses by combining wood and volcanic stone.

Residences built by Veryeriler in Alaçati in the Aegean province of Izmir, use stones made from “tufa” rock that contain ash, sand and lava produced by volcanic eruptions.

The homes are naturally warm during in winter and cool during in summer.

Speaking to Anatolia news agency, Alpan Veryeri, deputy chairman of the company, said Veryeriler had built 150 residences in Alaçatý in the past five years. “With 46 new stone houses that we will start building in September, we will be creating a new neighborhood in Alaçati,” Veryeri said. The building project is called “Alaçati Tas Evler” (Alaçatý Stone Houses).

The residences take ancient Greek architecture as an example. “We never go for the easy way in construction,” Veryeri said. “We are building one wall in three weeks, all with manual labor. The laid-down stones have become our signature in buildings. We are putting in a lot of labor, but we are creating new neighborhoods that look like the old Greek ones.”

The company purchases land that is not being used for farming, he said, adding that the company’s activities are environmentally friendly.

“We have furnished our streets with trees and flowers. For homebuyers who requested it so, we have planted huge olive and fruit trees in the gardens,” he said. “We are basically carrying the 1900s to the year 2010.”

Natural insulation
The combination of tufa with wood makes homes warm during winter and cool during summer, Veryeri said. “Tufa is a natural construction material. When it is extracted from the quarry, it is soft. But when it comes into contact with air, wind and the sun, it hardens. It helps build very strong constructions and also facilitates heat insulation.”

When tufa stones are used, there is no need for iron, coating or paint, he said. “After the application, the stones clasp together day by day, making the construction stronger. This stone also has a color that changes in accordance with the season. We shape them through manual labor and create 60-centimeters-thick walls.”

The target demographic for the “Alaçati Tas Evler” project is white-collar people, according to Veryeri.

“However, in the past few years, those that are at the upper segment in income have shown great interest in our projects,” he said. “Up to now, we have conducted 90% of our sales to customers that live in Istanbul. Five% of the demand came from Izmir and another 5% came from abroad.”

Turgay Durak, chief executive of Koç Holding, is among Veryeriler’s customers, according to the deputy chairman.

Residences within the project are being sold for between €225,000 and €350,000. The usable space ranges between 110 m² and 150 m², while gardens range between 200 m² and 250 m².

The company has completed 130 residences and aims to deliver 24 residences to owners this year. One stone house can be completed in around nine months, as it necessitates 10 truck-loads of stone
